The Bolsheviks sabotaged their own country in WW I so they could take
over what was left after the defeat by the Germans. The American
led defeat of the Germans on the Western Front within a
year saved Russia from losing about a fifth of its land area to
the Germans.
So it's not unthinkable for a political party to help
defeat its own country in the hope that they can take power.
